How to spot posts going viral early on Bluesky
The fastest way to spot a Bluesky post going viral is to compare it with what that account normally gets, within the first few hours. A post doing five or ten times its account's usual numbers is breaking out, even if the raw count still looks small.

The signals that matter
- Speed: how many interactions a post has in its first hour or two, compared with that account's usual posts at the same age.
- Reposts and quote posts: when people pass a post on or add their own take, it's traveling beyond the account's own followers.
- Reply spikes: a sudden flood of replies often means controversy or breaking news.
- Pickup elsewhere: the same story starting to appear on other accounts or platforms.
Doing it by hand on Bluesky
- Make a Bluesky list of the accounts on your beat and pin it as a feed, so their posts show up together.
- Note the likes, reposts and quote posts on recent posts from each account.
- Compare new posts with those numbers, and watch for quote posts picking up quickly.
Where the manual method breaks down
A list feed shows posts in order, not by how unusual they are, and Bluesky doesn't show view counts. A breakout from a small account is easy to scroll past.
Doing it with SocialWire
Add the Bluesky accounts you follow to a SocialWire list, alongside accounts from other platforms if you like. SocialWire scans them on your schedule and sorts every post by ×normal, so the breakouts are at the top.
