How to spot posts going viral early on Facebook
The fastest way to spot a Facebook post going viral is to compare it with what that account normally gets, within the first few hours. A post doing five or ten times its account's usual numbers is breaking out, even if the raw count still looks small.

The signals that matter
- Speed: how many interactions a post has in its first hour or two, compared with that account's usual posts at the same age.
- Shares relative to likes: when people pass a post on, it's traveling beyond the account's own followers.
- Comment spikes: a sudden flood of comments often means controversy or breaking news.
- Pickup elsewhere: the same story starting to appear on other accounts or platforms.
Doing it by hand on Facebook
- Make a list of the Pages you need to watch. Facebook's Feeds tab lets you mark Pages as Favorites and see their posts in order.
- For each Page, note the reactions, comments and shares on a handful of recent posts. That's your rough baseline.
- Check new posts against it a few times a day. Pay most attention to shares, which show a post spreading beyond the Page's followers.
Where the manual method breaks down
It works for five Pages. It doesn't work for fifty. Baselines go out of date, you can't sort across Pages, and Facebook's own insights only cover Pages you manage.
Doing it with SocialWire
Add the Facebook accounts you follow to a SocialWire list, alongside accounts from other platforms if you like. SocialWire scans them on your schedule and sorts every post by ×normal, so the breakouts are at the top.
