How to spot posts going viral early on Instagram

The fastest way to spot an Instagram post going viral is to compare it with what that account normally gets, within the first few hours. A post doing five or ten times its account's usual numbers is breaking out, even if the raw count still looks small.

The signals that matter

Doing it by hand on Instagram

  1. Add the accounts you watch to your Favorites so their posts show up in that feed.
  2. Note likes, comments and, for Reels, views on a few recent posts from each account.
  3. Compare new posts with those numbers. Reels can take off much faster than photos, so compare like with like.

Where the manual method breaks down

Some accounts hide like counts, which makes comparisons harder. Checking dozens of profiles by hand takes time, and there's no way to sort posts from different accounts by how unusual they are.

Doing it with SocialWire

Add the Instagram accounts you follow to a SocialWire list, alongside accounts from other platforms if you like. SocialWire scans them on your schedule and sorts every post by ×normal, so the breakouts are at the top.
