The CrowdTangle alternative for publishers

Find the story before it trends.

SocialWire tracks the accounts that matter to your publication across Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, YouTube and Bluesky, and flags the posts doing far better than normal for that account.

Aug 14, 2024CrowdTangle shuts down

When Meta turned off CrowdTangle, newsrooms lost the simplest tool they had: follow a list of pages, see which posts were overperforming, and get to the story early.

Nothing affordable replaced it. The big listening platforms are built for brand marketing teams and sold through sales calls and annual contracts. SocialWire is built for publishers and the people who make the news.

How it works

Three steps from a list of accounts to your next story.

Step 1

Build a list

Add the public accounts on your beat: politicians, agencies, rival outlets, local groups, influencers. Mix Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, YouTube and Bluesky in one list.

Step 2

We scan on your schedule

Every 4 hours, twice a day, daily or on demand. Adding an account pulls in its recent history right away, so it's useful from the first minute.

Step 3

See what's breaking out

Every post is ranked by how unusual it is for that account. The posts at the top are the ones about to be everywhere. Set an alert and SocialWire tells you when one breaks out.

Adding accounts to a list in SocialWire: paste a page link, and each account shows when it was added, when it was last scanned and how many posts are being monitored.

The ×normal score

Big accounts always win on likes. They don't always have the story.

SocialWire compares every post to that account's own typical performance. A small local page and a national outlet sit side by side, judged fairly.

Ranked by raw interactions

  1. 1National News Network9.1M followers · usual post 6,8007,500
  2. 2Rep. Dana Whitfield64K followers · usual post 2272,180
  3. 3Cedar Valley Gazette18K followers · usual post 29412

  2. 2Rep. Dana WhitfieldAmbulance billing bill9.6×
  3. 3National News NetworkRoutine evening post1.1×
×normal = this post's interactions ÷ the account's typical post

As a rule of thumb, anything above 3× is unusual and anything above 10× means something is happening. Sample accounts shown.

An account page in SocialWire for NBC News on YouTube, showing about 12.2 million followers, a median score of 267, 616 posts in the last 30 days and its posts sorted by Overperforming.
Each account's median score is its "normal". A post scoring 2,670 on this NBC News channel would be 10× normal.

Built by journalists

Made by an Emmy- and Peabody-winning team from NBC, ABC and Mashable.

We built Roone for newsrooms and watched how people used it. They came for one thing: knowing what was breaking out on social. SocialWire is that tool, done properly.

FAQ

Questions journalists ask us.

What replaced CrowdTangle?

Meta replaced CrowdTangle with the Meta Content Library, which is limited to approved researchers. SocialWire gives working journalists the CrowdTangle workflow they knew: follow lists of public accounts and see which posts are overperforming. Sign-up is self-serve.

How is the ×normal score calculated?

We compare each post's interactions with that account's typical post. A score of 6× means the post is doing six times better than that account usually does.

Which platforms do you cover?

Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, YouTube and Bluesky, all in the same list.

Do I need a demo call or an annual contract?

No. You can start on your own with a monthly plan and cancel any time. Annual plans are optional and get two months free. If you're setting up SocialWire for a whole team, tell us your team size when you sign up and we'll help you get started.

How much does it cost?

Starter is $99 a month for up to 15 accounts. Pro is $249 a month for up to 45 accounts and 5 users. Bigger newsrooms get a custom plan. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. See pricing →
